Welcome to our seventh month of our current normal – if you are still working remotely or have started to return to campus, we hope that you are safe and well during these challenging times. The ASF Board is committed to providing our members programming and support during these times, if we can give you an hour of connection, we believe it is worth the effort.

We wanted to reach out to you and check in with you during this difficult time, as we watch the daily updates about not only about COVID-19, but also about the fight against systemic racism and police brutality, as people march and demonstrate to make sure their voices are heard. We wanted to pass along the resources that may be helpful to you around allyship, reactions from the Asian American community, actions you can take from wherever you are right now, and also encourage you to sign up for the Brave Spaces conversations being held this week, next week, and beyond (we are seeing amazing demand so far, so we will most likely plan more sessions) to learn more and have conversations with your colleagues about what we as an institution can do to support our community.

Another year has passed, and a new academic and fiscal year has begun. As we bask in the slower pace of campus before students arrive for fall quarter, I wanted to take a moment to ask for your feedback, gauge your interest in joining the ASF Board, and provide a quick recap for the past year.

Welcome to the last day of Fiscal Year 2017, and the soon to begin Fiscal Year 2018! I wanted to reflect on this past year for Asian Staff Forum and highlight we are looking for new volunteers to join our Board for FY18.
Looking back at FY17, all I can say is “wow.” We have over 1000 members on our mailing list! Thanks to our enthusiastic Board and to you, we hosted 18 events – an amazing number. Some of our event highlights include:

Stanford Asian American Awards was created by the Asian American Activities Center (A3C) Advisory Board which serves as an advocacy board to the Asian, Asian American, and larger Stanford communities. This award ceremony gathers members of the Stanford community and recognizes individuals for their tremendous service, achievement, and dedication. Please feel free to forward it to others who might be interested in nominating someone. We welcome nominations for any categories for undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Another year has come and gone, and we are about to embark on FY16. I wanted to send a brief memo recapping the past year, and we are currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join the ASF Board.
As I look back at FY15 and what ASF has accomplished, I’m proud to serve as chair as our group continues to grow and expand the events and opportunities we provide to our members. Some highlights:

On Wednesday, February 19, 2014, Asian Staff Forum held it's annual Lunar New Year Tea. Members of Asian Staff Forum came together to share tea, sweets, and traditions from their culture and how they celebrated the Lunar New Year.
We learned about the Japanese new year celebrations, receiving new clothes at the Lunar New Year, and receiving and giving red envelopes.
Thank you every one for attending and bringing your dish!

On Thursday, January 16th, a group of 40 attendees came to listen to the wisdom of three retired Asian Staff Forum members to discuss their experiences about the Stanford Retirement process.
Betty Oen, Herb Fong and Cora Wu, former Asian Staff Forum board members, shared tidbits about their time at Stanford, things they discovered about retiring, the decision to retire, and tips they wanted to share with members of Asian Staff Forum and the Stanford community.
